Caring for Your Drum

If you are working with a Medicine Drum purchased from or made with me, there are some things to consider when caring for or storing your drum, these are not so relevant if you are working with a synthetic Drum such as the Remo Buffalo Drum.

Please do not store your drum in extreme heat, cold or humidity, as these can damage both the hide and the timber frame. For example, avoid leaving in direct sunlight, hot car, or outside for prolonged periods.

In warm/dry environments, the skin may become tight, and sound “tinny”, by massaging the skin with your hand, your natural oils will soften the skin, alternatively a very light spritz with water.

In cool/humid environments the skin may become loose, and sound flat, you may even notice visual differences, by warming with your hand, alternatively gently heating with a fire, heater or even hairdryer, from a distance!

To store your drum, please hang or sit it on its side, or if laying it down, always skin side up (to protect the skin and also out of respect)!

Most importantly, work with your drum, as often as you can, develop a bond, care for it and respect it, and it will serve you well.
