The Reiki Reiju & Attunements
Reiju (霊授) literally means “spiritual blessing/empowerment.” In original Japanese Reiki, it’s a simple, repeatable ritual a teacher offers to strengthen your natural connection to Reiki. It isn’t the teacher “giving you” their energy; it’s more like an invitation to remember and access your own innate brightness.
“Attunement” is the Western-style ritual—often more elaborate—given at each Reiki level. It symbolically tunes you, like dialing in a radio, so Reiki flows more clearly and you can work with the practices of that level (and, in some lineages, symbols). In Holy Fire traditions you’ll also hear “placements” or “ignitions,” which serve the same core function.
Different names, same intention: both reiju and attunements open and clarify your channel to Reiki. They are cumulative rather than temporary; they don’t wear off, but receiving them again can deepen sensitivity and steadiness as your practice grows. Experiences vary—warmth, calm, emotional release, or simple quiet are all normal—and the real integration comes through continued practice with the precepts, meditation, self-treatment, and hands-on work.
